Northwest Normal University is located
in the city of Lanzhou, capital of Gansu province. Lanzhou
is a hub of communication in northwestern China. It is also
the economic, political and cultural center of Gansu province.
Northwest Normal University, located in a green suburb and
by the side of Yellow River, is amid beautiful surroundings.
The predecessor of NWNU is The National Beiping Normal University
which grew out of The Faculty of Education of The Metropolitan
University founded in 1902. After the July 7 Incident of 1937,
Beiping Normal University moved to Shanxi Province and then
to Lanzhou in 1941. In 1988 the university was renamed Northwest
Normal University.
The university boasts a good capacity of scientific research
and has won great academic success in the field of educational
theory, Chinese Literature, ancient Chinese language, chemistry
and chemical engineering and the study of inscription on bamboo
slips and wood tablets. The university occupies a total area
of 60 hectares and all the buildings on the campus have a
floor space of 460 thousand square meters. The university
library has a collection of 1.82 million volumes.
